Bright acidity and structured cup that Kenyan coffees are known for. Sweet and sour kiwis and lots of dark berries. The blackcurrant note isn't pronounced, but sits softly in the background - complimented by a pleasing savoury and sweet tomato note. Another year brings yet more stunning Kenyan coffees.

The Kibugu Cooperative Society in Embu County, where high elevations, fertile volcanic soils and a cool climate allow cherries to mature slowly. Around 1,050 smallholder farmers deliver cherry to the station. The coffee is fully washed, fermented for around 24 hours, washed clean of mucilage, and dried on raised beds. During drying, the parchment is turned regularly and covered during the hottest part of the day and at night to support slow, even drying.

About the Origin

Gikirima sits in the fertile highlands of Kenya, where rich volcanic soils, high elevation and cool night temperatures create the ideal conditions for developing the vivid acidity and fruit-forward complexity that Kenyan coffees are celebrated for. Kenya's central growing regions are among the most respected in the world, producing beans of exceptional clarity and depth thanks to their distinctive microclimates and carefully managed washing stations.

About the producer

Gikirima Washing Station serves the smallholder farmers of its surrounding community, many of whom have tended their plots for generations. Each farmer delivers carefully hand-picked cherries, which are processed with precision at the station to preserve the region's characteristic brightness and sweetness. This collaborative model — combining the knowledge of many small producers with rigorous processing standards — is what gives Gikirima its consistently outstanding quality.

About the varieties

  • SL28 & SL34: Kenya's iconic heirloom cultivars, developed by the Scott Agricultural Laboratories, prized for their intense berry fruit, blackcurrant complexity and lively acidity.

  • Peaberry: A natural curiosity — when a single seed develops inside the coffee cherry instead of two, the result is a denser, rounder bean with a sweeter, more concentrated flavour profile.

Together, these factors produce a cup that is complex, structured and unmistakably Kenyan — equally rewarding in the cup whether brewed as filter or espresso.
